How Credit Counseling Works

Credit counseling is a professional service that helps you manage your finances. A credit counselor evaluates your debts, credit, financial commitments, and day-to-day living expenses so you can become more financially secure.

Credit counseling helps you decide on the best way to handle your finances. This might include:

  • Debt consolidation
  • Debt settlement
  • Debt repayment strategies
  • Bankruptcy
  • General money management

Is Credit Counseling Right For You?

You might benefit from Utah credit counseling in the following circumstances:

  • Creditors are chasing you for unpaid debts
  • You are struggling to pay utility bills, rent, and other expenses
  • You want to negotiate a debt settlement or repayment plan with your creditors but need some help
  • You are considering bankruptcy
  • You would like some financial advice from an expert
  • You want to manage your credit better

There is no minimum credit score requirement to sign up for credit counseling in Utah.

You don't have to have lots of debt to enroll in credit counseling. This service could benefit you, even if you don't owe any money.

What to Expect From a Credit Counseling Session

Credit counseling starts with a financial consultation. A credit counselor will talk to you about your finances and provide you with resources that help you:

  • Budget and manage your money
  • Approach creditors about a settlement or payment plan
  • Prevent late payments in the future
  • Become debt-free

A credit counselor can also help you discover the root cause of your debt.

A Utah credit counseling session takes around 60 minutes. To prepare for your session, you need access to the following information:

  • Income details
  • Credit card information
  • Information about other financial commitments
  • Current debts
  • Monthly expenses (how much you spend on utility bills, groceries, rent, etc.)

Before a session, a credit counselor might ask to check your credit report to better understand your financial circumstances. However, this won't affect your credit score.
